The company began as the metal fabrication division of the Southern Spring Bed Company, founded in 1883 in Atlanta, Georgia. During the Great Depression, they branched into other markets beyond bed springs, which included welded wire shelving for a local telephone company to install in their service vans. By 1969, Masterack was supplying van storage systems and interiors to many local telephone companies, including Western Electric (AT&T).
